Tips – Making your house unattractive – to a house thief

If you or a friend have been a victim of a house robbery you will know what a traumatic experience it can be for you and your loved ones

Here are a few tips to dissuade a burglar

Intruder Alarm
Even if you think you live in a safe neighbourhood it is probably a good idea to invest in a recognised security alarm, always check the address and credentials of any company and ask for proof of identity from their representative before disclosing any personal security details.

Doors and Windows
Thieves look for an easy target so if they see an open window, that is the house they will attempt to rob.

All external doors should be fitted with British Standard 3621 5 lever mortice deadlock and a front door viewer at a height of the shortest adult occupier, also consider fitting a security chain which should always be used when opening the door to strangers.

Always lock your windows at night and when you are away from your house – even for a few moments – it may be just picking the children up from school or popping out for a pint of milk.

Security Lighting
Invest in the use of a time switch or sensor to control individual house lighting so that your home looks occupied when it is not, it is best to invest in energy efficient bulbs so that you can leave discreet porch and patio lights on at night.

Security Camera
A Camera is a great deterrent, it can be linked to video screens around the house or a recording machine which when an intruder is ‘caught in the act’ could be used as evidence in court.

If cost is an issue, you could consider buying dummy cameras, which are indiscernible from the real thing, but only you, will know they are not connected.

Signs
Advertise the fact that you have a Burglar Alarm by displaying the alarm companies prominently on the front window of door.

BEWARE OF THE DOG is another sign that is a good deterrent. The thought of being mauled by a Rottweiler would be enough to put off any potential intruder.

Perimeter Security
Check to see if your boundary fences etc. are secure, fit a substantial lock on gates leading to the rear and, if possible, raise the height of the gate and fences by fixing solid wood trellising to the top to stop a person climbing over, also plant some very thorny plants in strategic spots around the garden.
